WHY THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST ?

The United Church of Christ is a community of faith that seeks to respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The UCC was founded in 1957 as the union of several different Christian traditions: from the beginning of our history, we were a church that affirmed the ideal that Christians did not always have to agree to live together in communion. Our motto—"that they may all be one"—is Jesus' prayer for the unity of the church. The UCC is one of the most diverse Christian churches in the United States. Use the directory on the left of this page to read stories about the history and future of our community.

Doing justice, seeking peace and building community are central to the identity of the United Church of Christ. Throughout its history - from early engagement in the movement to abolish slavery to modern campaigns for civil rights and social justice - the UCC in every setting of the church has been engaged in ministries of compassion, advocacy and reconciliation. While there is a deep respect in the UCC for the right of every individual member to form her or his own views on these issues, there has always been a recognizable passion across our church to "make things right" - as a testament to our faith in God, our hope for God's future, our love for God's creation. In this way we seek to apply the commandment of Jesus Christ to love our neighbors as ourselves.

The best way to learn about the United Church of Christ is to visit. Because the UCC is a union of several Christian traditions and each congregation governs its own affairs, you will find a diversity of worship styles and theology in our church.

Throughout its history, the United Church of Christ has been at the forefront in the struggle for justice and equality. For more than thirty years, the General Synod of the UCC has adopted resolutions affirming lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, consistently calling for an end to discrimination, equal protection under the law, deploring hate crimes and violence, supporting relationships and families of all, and celebrating the gifts of every person for ministry and encouraging all settings of the church to be open and affirming of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, welcoming them and encouraging their participation in every aspect of the mission and ministry of the church.

HARRY KNOX OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN SPEAKS AT UCC GENERAL SYNOD 2007
Read HRC Religion and Faith Program Director Harry Knox ’s powerful speech, Remembering Who We Will Be: LGBT People and the United Church of Christ in 2057, delivered in Hartford, Conn., as part of the United Church of Christ’s 50th Anniversary General Synod. Knox’s speech describes the historic transformation the UCC church has brought to GLBT people and their families and offers a vision for the future built on their powerful witness for GLBT equality.
WHY I LOVE HOPE UNITES

I love my church because it is like The Wizard of Oz – it’s about having a heart and a brain. And courage!

What I love most about my church is that it’s a place where we feel free to “think out loud together”.

You know why I love my church? Because for one hour a week I get reminded that life is more than getting up and going to work, dealing with problems, and worrying about everything under the sun.

I love the United Church of Christ because we’re giraffes not turtles; we aren’t afraid to stick our necks out. We ordained the first African-American in the 18th century, the first woman in the 19th century, and the first openly gay person in the 20th century. That helps me stick my neck out and take a risk every now and then.

I love my church because the sermons make me think about things I would probably normally not think about.

Why do I love the UCC? Because it’s not just about believing in Christ, it’s about following Jesus!
